BMW 5 Series, 1981 - 1988
Introduced in 1981, the second-generation fifth-series BMW, codenamed the E28, was visually little different from its predecessor, even since 1972, but the new model was a completely redesigned car and a really very good car. The E28 was produced with four and then legendary six-cylinder petrol engines at the time, and with the introduction of the 524td in 1983, it became the first BMW-powered diesel engine. Although BMW was not fascinated by diesel engines and preferred high-revolution petrol engines, the oil crisis that raged in the 1970s also made BMW think economically. The base 518 was the only one with a carburetor, while everyone else had Motronic or Jetronic fuel injection systems. The M20 engine was fitted to the 520i and 525i, while the M30 was used in the 528i, 535i and M535i versions. Both engines are legendary and are renowned in the automotive world as almost eternal as long as they are well maintained. Inside, the car, although spartan, was quality and had a lot of comfort equipment such as power windows, electric seats and even an on-board computer. Also, the E28 was the first 5 Series with a driver-facing center console and the first to be available with a new feature at the time, the ABS anti-lock braking system. The style of the car was developed under the direction of BMW designer Claus Luthe, who also worked on the first-generation top five. The car is truly iconic - the exhaust pipe is fitted through the center, and the shark-style front end is perhaps the most recognizable of all cars of the era. It was a time when BMW cars invaded the ranks of the most popular premium segment cars where Mercedes-Benz had previously reigned.
