The Smart Roadster is a small two-seater. Following the Smart philosophy to minimize everything, this small, practical and single-purpose car has been created to give the driver pleasure. The Smart Roadster and Roadster Coupe were introduced in 2003 and are built on an extended Fortwo platform (full car length is 3427 mm). Both cars were unique in that they were significantly smaller than the smallest sports cars on the market - the Toyota MR2, MG TF, Fiat Barchetta and Mazda MX-5, but were able to offer just as much practicality and dynamism, and were also significantly more economical. Both the Roadster and Roadster Coupe can be manufactured with a removable Targa-type roof or an electrically operated canvas roof. The car’s power ranged from 61 to 82 hp, and Mercedes-Benz engines were mounted at the rear. A special Brabus version with 101 hp was also produced. However, the price of the Smart Roadster was not much lower than that of the Fiat Barchetta or Mazda MX-5. Maybe that’s why the cars couldn’t boast of high demand and in 2008 their production was discontinued. Still, the car was fun to drive - he was voted the Funniest Car of 2005 in the Top Gear show.
