Saab 9-5 is the flagship of Swedish carmaker Saab. In the development of the Saab 9-5, the new Saab owners (General Motors) introduced the new platform (shared with the Opel Vectra B) as the basis for the future car, on which Saab engineers basically worked. The body lines retain the typical elements of Saab's "Nordic" design, while at the same time achieving an excellent air resistance coefficient Cx = 0.29. Initially, the 9-5 was produced only in a sedan body, and was equipped with low-pressure turbo engines, which were controlled by one of the most advanced systems of the time - the Trionic 7. It is a microprocessor performing 2 million. operations and controlling combustion, turbine pressure and injection. In addition, at the end of each stroke, the computer checks that the flammable mixture is completely burned and, if necessary, adjusts the engine accordingly. The result is an unusually low level of harmful particles in the exhaust gas. Also, a flaw in all turbine engines such as the "turbocharger" has been virtually eliminated. Traditionally, turbines from two manufacturers are used: Garrett and Mitsubishi. 9-5 is one of the safest cars of the year. It remains so to this day. One of the innovations is the active front seat backrest system SAHR. Other passive safety features: impact energy-absorbing areas at the front, impact protection at the rear, beams on the doors, special strut construction to protect against side impacts, four airbags, impact-resistant bumpers (up to 8 km / h). Of the active elements - ABS with EBD. Repeated crash tests only confirmed the highest marks in the safety rating.
Bioethanol-powered Saab 9-5 was produced. These 2.0T BioPower (180 hp) and 2.3T BioPower engines are optimized to run on E85 fuel.

In Sweden, Aspen (USA), Scotland and Poland, versions of the Saab 9-5 Aero are used as police cars.
