The sixth generation Lancer has been upgraded and produced on an earlier model platform. The car has remained true to Lancer’s formula for success - a small, inexpensive family sedan or station wagon. A version of the hatchback known in Europe as Colt was also produced. Between 1996 and 2004, Lancer replaced the new Mitsubishi model Carisma in some markets. However, the powerful version of the Lancer, the Evolution, continued to be produced.
An electric version of the Lancer called the Libero EV was produced, which was "powered" by NiCd batteries.

The Lancer version was produced with the smallest serial V6 engine. The engine displacement was only 1.6 liters.
