A well-known, but already forgotten Soviet-era car. The VAZ-2101 is a compact sedan or station wagon (VAZ-2102) manufactured by AvtoVAZ from 1970 to 1984. The car is known in the West as the Lada, within the Soviet Union and in other countries of the Eastern Bloc called the Žiguli is a version of the Fiat 124 car manufactured under license. The main differences between the VAZ-2101 and Fiat 124 are the thicker steel body, the VAZ engine valves are located above the engine head, the aluminum drum rear wheel brakes instead of the discs. The car had a 1.2 L petrol engine and rear-wheel drive. Early versions of the VAZ-2101 had an engine start handle so that the car could also be started through the Siberian cold. The VAZ-2101 was banned from sale in the West because it did not compete with the Fiat 124, but since 1974 the Fiat has been replaced by the 131 Mirafiori model and Žigulys was launched in the West, which lasted until 1989. Various versions of VAZ-2101 were produced - VAZ-21011, VAZ-21013, VAZ-21016 and others, the main difference of which was the engine displacement. Although this car did not have impressive characteristics, specially adapted versions of Žiguliai successfully participated in various rally competitions. Even more interesting is the fact that Žiguliai versions with Wankel type rotor motors were produced. Only a few companies around the world (including Mazda) have decided to produce models with these engines due to specific service, high fuel and oil consumption.
