The S60 model has finally ushered in a new breakthrough in Volvo’s design philosophy, albeit similar to the recently unveiled S80. Volvo itself has described the model as a "revolution," so the company's next models follow exactly the design line demonstrated by this model. The car is built on the Volvo P2 platform, which it shares with other Volvo models: the S80, V70 and XC90. The most powerful variant called the S60 R has an all-wheel drive system AWD (Haldex) coupled with a 5-cylinder 2.5-liter engine with 300 hp and 400 Nm of torque. This version is combined with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed automatic. Other enhancements that set the R-Series apart from others include four-piston Brembo brakes, 18-inch rims, blue indicator lights, xenon headlights and 4C suspension. convenience.Jeremy Clarkson described the car as, "It's more of a mini Rolls-Royce Phantom version than a serious competitor to the BMW M3."
In 2000, the Volvo S60 T5 broke as many as 18 British speed records, including the highest average speed record in a 24-hour period (for a production car in the displacement class from 2 to 3 liters) at 217.4 km / h.

The S60 has been used in various ring races. In the SCCA Pro Racing World Challenge Championship in the GT class, the Volvo S60R has been competing since 2006, and in 2010 won both the racing and team standings. For several years, the S60 also competed in the Swedish Touring Car Championship, and from 2002 to 2007, the S60 even had its own racing series, in which 26 factory-built S60 models competed.
