The Volvo S40 / V40 is a compact luxury car with sedan (S40) and station wagon (V40) bodies. They were manufactured in the Netherlands by NedCar in a joint plant with Mitsubishi. The S40 / V40 is produced on a common platform with the Mitsubishi Carisma, although the Japanese model was not very popular in Europe. In 2001, the S40 received a number of upgrades - more economical engines, direct fuel injection for diesel engines, additional safety features, larger brake discs, a new front suspension, and more. The Volvo S40 was the first car to be awarded four Euro NCAP stars in safety tests. Although the small Volvo car was praised for its extensive list of safety features, solid body, good interior design, the car could not fully match competitors from Mercedes-Benz, BMW or Audi.
