The third-generation Volkswagen Golf was launched in 1991, followed by the European Car of the Year. The Golf station wagon was first introduced to compete with the Ford Escort and Vauxhall / Opel Astra station wagons. A version of the GTI was re-introduced, although the more powerful (150 hp) is much heavier and was therefore not seen as a successful solution. However, there was another variant - VR6 engine with 2.8 L and 174 hp (128 kW), car weight ~ 1285 kg, maximum speed 222 km / h - almost irresistible for cars of this class at that time (better even for Ford Escort RS2000 or Opel Astra GSi). The VR6 was a revolutionary engine in its time because it combines the best features of V-shaped and linear motors. It has 2 cylinder blocks arranged at an angle of 15 °, but shares one cylinder head. This arrangement allowed the engineers to accommodate the six-cylinder engine in the same space as the four-cylinder engine. Overall, the car has been well received by critics and excellent buyers. Golf, as always, is characterized by practicality, economy and space. On the downside - maybe a little too practical and convenient, so boring, in addition, with a few unreliable reliability problems.
The third-generation Volkswagen Golf was named European Car of the Year in 1992. It was Volkswagen’s first title winner in this election.

This is the first Golf to have a wagon body.
