In 1995, the Corolla was refurbished with new split headlights and taillights, although the interior remained the same. A sporty WRC model with a six-speed gearbox was produced. It was the base car for Toyota racing models participating in the WRC Championship. The Corolla is visually appealing, albeit simple, mechanically reliable and economical. It can be operated for hundreds of thousands of kilometers. This is a typical enduring Toyota. Others complain that the interior is cramped, especially on the rear seats, and the engines don’t have much power.
The World Rally Championship (WRC) featured a three-wheeled Corolla with a 3S-GTE engine and a 4WD system "borrowed" from the Toyota Celica GT-Four. The car debuted in 1997 with Didier Auriol and Marcus Grönholm behind the wheel. In 1998, Carlos Sainz, driven by the car, won his first victory at the Monte Carlo Rally, and in 1999, the Toyota Corolla WRC team became the winner of the Designers ’Cup.
