The legal street flyer returned once again. The Lancer platform was completely changed in 1996, along with the Evolution, which became hugely popular around the world. The motor was rotated 180 ° to better balance the weight and eliminate unwanted torque effects. The RS version was produced as a racing car that had a number of improvements - fitted with several chassis reinforcements, thinner glazing and body parts, discarded air conditioning, and more. The GSR and RS had a new turbine that increased power to 280 hp (206 kW) / 6500 rpm and torque to 352 Nm / 3000 rpm. Mitsubishi’s new active power control system features steering, throttle sensors that transmit information to an electronically controlled hydraulic system that distributes power separately to each of the rear wheels. It's a very advanced system, and the result is all 10,000 cars sold very quickly.
In 1996, 1997 and 1998, Tommi Mäkinen became the Finnish champion with this car at the World Rally Championship (WRC), and in 1998 Mitsubishi also won the Designers' Cup.
