Introduced in 2004, the new SLK is a fundamentally new car. The new model has a much smoother and more aggressive design - the bonnet with a built-in large triangular star is clearly copied from the Mercedes-Benz SLR supercar. However, the car remained small, manoeuvrable and now with much more powerful engines, which corresponds to the name of the car - the name SLK in German sounds like “Sportlich, Leicht und Kurz”, which in Lithuanian is sporty, light and short. The weakest model, the SLK 200 Kompressor, has a 1.8 L 135 kW (184 hp) four-cylinder turbo engine, and the most powerful SLK 55 AMG has an impressive 5.4 L 265 kW (360 hp) V8 powerplant, which allows the car to accelerate from 0-100 km / h in just 4.9 seconds. A modified version of this car was used as a safety car in Formula 1 racing.
