SLK is a compact roadster manufactured since 1996. The name SLK in German sounds like “Sportlich, Leicht und Kurz”, which in Lithuanian is sporty, light and short. The car was praised for its youthful design, solid auto-folding roof and fun sensations behind the wheel. It is one of the first cars to have such a roof system (previously it had a Mitsubishi 3000GT manufactured since 1995), which was later copied by other manufacturers and models - Peugeot 206cc, Lexus SC, Chrysler Sebring, etc. The Mercedes-Benz SLK was designed to compete with the Porsche Boxster, Mazda MX-5 and BMW Z3 models. An AMG variant with 354 hp (264 kW) and a 3.2 L V6 hand-assembled engine was also produced. This SLK 32 AMG was a direct competitor to the BMW M Series and the Porsche Boxster S. Among the disadvantages of the car are a very small trunk (a big fault for a comfortable hard roof), problems with the electrical system.
It is one of the first cars to have a hardtop folding system - previously the Mitsubishi 3000GT, manufactured since 1995, had such a system.
