In 1986, the Lotus, which survived the worst of times, was bought by the GM concern. The new owners thought it was time to expand the range of Lotus customers and start producing a cheaper car that was accessible to the general public. Thus, in 1989, the Lotus Elan Roadster was born. Just then appeared the legendary Mazda MX-5 and the charismatic BMW Z1 models. With the Elan name, the company tried to revive the range of small sports cars that the company was famous for in the 60s and 70s. The new Lotus Elan was designed with serious ambition - more than 55 million was invested in the development of the car. USD. It was the most expensive Lotus project in history. The car was well tested - 19 test cars were smashed, a million miles from Arizona to the Arctic, and a full 24-hour moroton in race mode. The body of the car, in accordance with the best traditions of the company for the production of passenger cars, was made of fiberglass composite. But unlike other Lotus, the Elan was powered by front wheels. And while it doesn’t sound very sporty, the company said the car is the best for a car of this size, weight and power. Indeed, the car was well-managed - and although it lacked the lights that rear-wheel-drive competitors have, Elan has been named the best-handled front-wheel-drive car in the world. The wedge-shaped design of the Lotus Elan reminded of the bigger brother Lotus Esprit: thanks to the folding headlights, the car looks dynamic, the sloping bonnet goes smoothly into the sloping windshield, flat wings and handles without handles provide minimalism, with huge rectangular lights. The car has a typical 80s and early 90s design and looks really exceptional today. True, the interior of soft forms is not interesting for someone - it is reminiscent of hundreds of other cars of the time. Under the hood, Lotus installed Isuzu 1.6-liter engines. The most powerful turbocharged version had 162 hp (121 kW) and ran from 0 to 60 mph in an incredibly impressive 6.5 seconds. Still, the sales figures for this well-made car were disappointing. A well-managed, equally powerful and cheaper Mazda MX-5 coger was the main reason for poor Lotus Elan sales.
