The Infiniti FX is a mid-size SUV designed to compete with the Porsche Cayenne, Volvo XC90 and Volkswagen Touareg SUVs. It has the same FM platform as the rear-wheel drive Nissan 350Z, while the Nissan Murano is based on the front-wheel drive Nissan Altima. The names FX35 and FX45 refer to the optional engines: 3.5l and 4.5l. The FX35 is available in both RWD and AWD. The main engine 3.5l 24-valve V6 VQ35DE is made of aluminum with low-friction molybdenum-plated pistons and a continuously variable valve timing system.
