In the early 1990s, the ZX was Citroën's attempt to fight the coger in the most competitive class, the golf class. There were plenty of strong competitors here at the time - Volkswagen Golf, Ford Escort, Opel Astra and many other recognized models. Unfortunately, the Citroën ZX was not popular, although the same chassis was used in the much more popular model, the Peugeot 306. The same platform was used by Citroën Berling and Peugeot Partner commercial vehicles.
