The Plymouth Prowler is a retro-style, specially designed car. It has open, formula-type front wheels. Chrysler engineers are said to have been given complete leeway to create a hot rod-type sports car. The design was inspired by the famous designer Chip Foose’s car Hemisfear. The Prowler engine is taken from the Chrysler LH series cars, developing a 3.5l SOHC V6 with 214 hp (160 kW). In 1999, it received a more powerful 253 hp (189 kW) engine. Both engines were connected to a 4-speed automatic transmission. The transmission is located at the rear of the car and is connected to the engine by shafts that rotate at engine speed. This layout is similar to that used by the C5 Corvette or Alfa Romeo 75 and helps balance the weight at a ratio of 50 to 50. The Prowler is the first rear-wheel drive Plymouth since 1989. The car’s assemblies (mainly the chassis) used a lot of aluminum with components glued together.
This car is one of the first retro-style cars that has brought back the fashion to "resurrect" old design ideas to new life. It was followed by cars such as the Chrysler PT Cruiser, Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Thunderbird, Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger.

The Prowler is the first rear-wheel drive Plymouth since 1989.

The car’s transmission was positioned at the rear of the car much like the C5 Corvette, Porsche 944 or Alfa Romeo 75. In this way, the rear wheels gained more weight as the aim was to increase traction. In addition, there was an ideal distribution of weight on both axles: 50% to 50%.
