The second-generation Z4 was unveiled at the 2009 North American International Auto Show. The car has a folding hardtop made of aluminum, which is made of two parts and can be folded in 20 seconds. The most powerful variant of the sDrive35i has a 2.9 L, 6-cylinder in-line engine with two turbines and develops 225 kW (306 hp) and 400 Nm of torque. The new roadster has a completely new interior and exterior design that, while similar in style to the old Z4, has become more aerodynamic and attractive. The new Z4 can be equipped with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, it is also the first BMW roadster with an iDrive system. Compared to the previous Z4, it became 148 mm longer, 9 mm wider and significantly heavier - up to 150 kg.
BMW is preparing special Z4 versions of the FIA GT3 for private teams. These GT3 Z4s weigh just 1190 kg and have 4.4-liter V8 engines with 515 hp (379 kW).
